Current IssueVol. 1, No. 1 (2024): Poliorama
Published October 29, 2024
Issue Description
The first issue of the Poliorama Musicale, in keeping with the inspiration suggested by the magazine’s title, includes various contributions on the cultural and musical life of Southern Italy in the nineteenth century.
It opens with an Editorial, curated by the Scientific Director and the Scientific Editorial Board, followed by the Introduction, which contains a detailed description of the painting by Domenico Battaglia featured on the cover page, curated by art historian Isabella Valente.
The essay section begins with an article by Madison U. Sowell focused on the principal stages of the career of Gaetano De Angelis, the first mime of the Teatro di San Carlo.
The second essay, a joint study by Tiziana Grande and Rosa Perrotta, focuses on the illustrations of nineteenth-century periodicals and the role of satire, based on sources kept in Neapolitan libraries.
This is followed by a contribution from Loredana Palma on three poets displaying Risorgimento ideals: Giuseppina Guacci Nobile, Laura Beatrice Oliva Mancini, and Irene Ricciardi Capecelatro, whose texts were set to music by famous composers of the time.
With Anna Rosaria Valanzuolo’s article, the focus shifts to instrumental music. The author examines the trios of Vincenzo De Meglio for violin, cello, and piano, analyzing their compositional process and drawing interesting reflections on the genre of salon music.
The issue concludes with a study by Chiara Pastorino, offering a careful reinterpretation of the correspondence between composer Franco Alfano and the Ricordi publishing house, redefining the chronology of some events related to the musician’s life and work, and providing a rich dossier containing unpublished documents.
